Road trips 101

Going on a road trip is possibly one of my favourite activities. I love driving through the countryside at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise and seeing empty paddocks and then driving through small towns and seeing the culture and driving through the pitch black in the middle of nowhere with no lights. It's so exciting and liberating and I wish that I could do it all the time. In about 2 weeks, I'll be going on a road trip with my family with some family friends down to a beach. The trip is the shortest we've ever done - 2 hours - but I still need all my road trip essentials.
SO... What do you need?
Duffel Bag - You'll need a large soft bag to keep in the car with you because if it's in the boot you won't be able to access it very often. Depending on where you sit in the car, if you sit at the front you would keep the bag below your feet and can be a comfortable foot rest, but if you sit in the back then you can put it on the seat next to you // Shoes - Comfortable shoes are a must. You don't want to be wearing them in the car but you'll want them to be easy to slip on and comfortable to walk in in case you make a stop and need to go somewhere or just want to explore. I recommend Converse. // Keys - These are a must. No matter if it's keys for the car, or your motel/hotel room that you are staying at, you NEED keys. // Hair Ties - You'll need a lot of hair ties spare in case they break or you lose them. They area also extremely fun to fiddle with if you're bored of everything else. It's good to have a main hair tie like a scrunchie as they are very comfortable and won't pull on your hair as much as elastics. // Earphones/Headphones - Headphones are fabulous and are so good to block out other sound to keep you in your own little world. Although noise block can be a bit of a problem and so it's good to have earphones. Also headphones do run out of battery and you want to have a backup pair of earphones if this happens. Earphones are great for conversations but still wanting to listen to music as they don't block out noise and they are easier to rest your head in different positions if you are wanting to sleep.// Bobby Pins - You are going to lose a million  of these. Just have a huge stash with you always. // Phone - Don't forget your phone. It's as simple as that. // CD - If you are more of a person that likes to share music, have good CD's with you. Sometimes I'll make playlists and burn them to discs so that everyone in the car is able to listen along. // Blanket - These are definitely a must. You can never have too many blankets and make a great pillow which helps take up less space. // Camera - You are bound to experience some cool things along this trip and you will want a camera to capture the memories. // Lip Balm - Self explanatory. You can not leave home without a good lip balm - ever. // Hair Brush - You'll probably go for a few stops and if you are wanting to just tidy your hair up before roaming a new town, you might want to brush your hair but honestly this isn't needed as you'll probably never see these people ever again. // Laptop - Great for watching movies and playing games. // Socks - Comfortable socks are a must! It will just make everything better to have cute and comfy socks! // iPod - Put all your music in the one spot instead of your phone so it takes up less storage. // Loose Change - You'll need it at some point so why not just bring it. // Snacks - LOTS OF SNACKS. // Clock - No matter if it's built in the car, or a watch, or a portable alarm clock or you're checking your phone, you need a clock. // Money - And lots of it. // Drink - Stock up on a lot of bottles of water but some fun drinks as well like juices or soft drinks are always good because water does get boring after a while. // Moisturizer - Once again, you can not leave home without moisturizer. // Sunglasses - Bring your coolest pair of sunnies! You'll feel like your in a movie as you cruise along the streets and also it protects your eyes from the crazy beams of the sun. // Flannel - You must have a flannel! They are so comfortable and so simple. Wear an oversized one so that you don't need to wear pants and it will be even more comfortable. // Mascara - If you're feeling like you look a bit dead and you're about to stop to have lunch somewhere and you are wanting to look good (which you really don't because you won't see the people in the town again most likely), just bring a light mascara and quickly dash it on your lashes. // Soap - The amount of times I've needed to use a bathroom in a totally random place that was disgusting and had no soap has been endless - always have spare soap or sanitizer because it can get really dirty and gross. // Book - Last but not least, a good book. I'm currently reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It won the Pulitzer Prize last year for fiction and is over 800 pages long so it will keep you occupied for a very long time.

Ultimately, the packing is up to you but these are my essentials for every road trip. Tell me below about your road trips and what you like to bring along for the ride!
